Box-office smash comes to HLT

Posted 5 November 2019

HLT’s final play for 2020, The Game’s Afoot – or Holmes for the Holidays, made box-office history during its world premiere at the historic Cleveland Play House, Ohio, in 2011, when it became the top-selling show in that theatre’s history. The play, by Ken Ludwig, received an Edgar Allan Poe Award in 2012. And now we’re bringing it to Howick Little Theatre’s stage. As Shakespeare once wrote, “All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players.” For famed stage actor William Gillette, the leading character in The Game’s Afoot, this ‘stage’ is the living room of his Connecticut home and the ‘men and women’ friends invited for a weekend of Christmas revelry. In his covert attempt to catch a would-be killer, these guests become ‘players’ in a melodramatic game. Gillette blurs the lines of reality and fantasy as he takes on the role of detective, transforming himself into his renowned on-stage persona, Sherlock Holmes.
