Curtain Up! exhibition at Auckland Library

Posted 1 September 2019

HLT features in the Auckland Central Library's Curtain Up! exhibition, a visual snapshot of Auckland theatre from the 1950s to the 1980s. It is on view in the Sir George Grey Special Collections level 2 space at the library until November 24. This pivotal time in Auckland’s theatrical history explores the rise of professional drama with a New Zealand flavour, from its grassroots in community and youth theatre. Included are examples of venues lost and saved, demonstrating the importance of performance space to the success or otherwise of theatre companies over time. A wealth of material held within the Auckland Libraries heritage collections will be on display, from programmes and photographs to posters, flyers and tickets. This exhibition will appeal to anyone with an interest in performance, drama, design and Auckland’s history. A photograph from a 1964 HLT show, The Shop at Sly Corner, directed by a founder member, Tom Taylor, is being used to promote the exhibition.
