THEATRE ARCHITECT Hugh Phillips Dies

Posted 27 August 2018

Howick Little Theatre was saddened to learn of the death of Hugh Phillips, a life member and HLT's joint Patron, on Saturday, August 25, aged 89. Hugh, who joined the theatre in 1960 and was one of its seven longest-serving members, was the architect behind the theatre's original design, which was built in Lloyd Elsmore Park and opened in 1974, and other changes in later years. As well as his early on-stage work, he was Vice-President for three terms, from 1969 to 1971, at a crucial time in the theatre's history when it had no home of its own. Hugh's funeral will be held in the Chapel of Resthaven Funerals, on the corner of Picton and Walter MacDonald Streets, Howick, on Thursday, August 30, at 2pm. He will be greatly missed.
